In our Polar Bear class, children are provided with a variety of materials that they are free to explore and manipulate while using their own language to describe what they are doing.
A key aspect of our curriculum is to learn through active participation in multi-sensory activities. The children learn to connect with peers and adults in our warm, inclusive & loving multicultural community with a strong foundation in social and emotional development. The teachers follow the children’s lead when discussing their ideas and activities, and work with the children to solve any problems that may arise.
The teachers plan activities and investigations based on the children's interest and passions as the year develops. For example, the children took an interest in tools you might find in your home. The teachers provided safe opportunities to use hammers and nails (motor coordination). The children were able to sort and classify (math skills) building materials such as wood, metal and plastic. Activities also included painting and gluing wood sculptures. They walked around the community, observing and documenting a local house being built.
The benefit of this approach is that it engages children utilizing their interests, encourages curiosity, fosters a love of learning, and teaches emotional intelligence and problem solving—all through play!
